Luggage on Flybus
What you can bring on board

Even visitors who like to travel light might find themselves with a little extra luggage than usual. Iceland’s unpredictable weather means that it’s a good idea to pack for all seasons – no matter when you come. But that might leave you worrying about how to transport your gear once you arrive, though as you’ll soon gather, transporting luggage on Flybus isn’t a problem. Whether you’ve arrived with a single suitcase or are planning to bring larger items, this article contains all you need to know about the Flybus baggage policy and what you can bring on board.
What’s the Flybus luggage allowance for passengers?
Flybus has a generous luggage allowance, which is good news for anyone arriving with typical holiday and adventure baggage. However, there is a Flybus suitcase limit that you’ll need to be aware of. Each ticketholder is entitled to carry two bags free of charge, so long as they don’t weigh more than 23kg each.
As this is broadly in line with airline weight limits this shouldn’t present any issues. If you’ve flown with carry-on only, it will depend on the size of your bag as to where it goes. For instance, a wheelie case will go in the hold of the bus, whereas a relatively small soft-sided bag might be able to fit if brought on board.
However, sometimes it’s necessary to travel with additional bags, for instance if you’re here for a longer stay. If that’s the case, they’ll incur an extra cost above the price of your ticket. Bring a third suitcase and we can carry it for a fee of 1500 ISK. There’s no need to pre-book this upfront; all you need to do is notify the driver on the day and pay as you board.
Where do larger items get stowed?
Large items go in the luggage compartment of the bus. Simply stroll over to the Flybus stop close to where you exit the arrivals hall. Show the driver your ticket and then hand over your suitcases or backpacks to be stowed under the bus. When you reach the BSI bus terminal in downtown Reykjavik, gather your belongings and either walk to your hotel or switch to one of our feeder buses.
It’s advisable as with any public transport to keep personal items and valuables with you, so that you don’t risk losing or forgetting anything important like your passport or money. These smaller items can come on the bus with you and be placed on your lap or by your feet. It’s only a 45 minute drive to the BSI terminal, so you won’t find this uncomfortable.

Do staff handle luggage or do passengers load it themselves?
Many passengers are happy to load suitcases and backpacks onto the bus themselves; if you’re struggling, help is readily available. Often, a member of the Flybus team will take charge. This is to ensure that the luggage is stacked neatly and at busy times there’ll be space for everyone’s luggage.
Working together as a team helps all passengers to be on their way as quickly as possible, so it’s important to do as instructed on the day. While reasonable care will be taken by our staff members, we aren’t able to take responsibility for minor cuts, scratches, and dents or for any damage that may occur to items that protrude from travel bags, such as retractable handles, wheels and straps.
What’s the procedure for travellers carrying larger items or specialist gear?
Some travellers will be transporting items that aren’t your run-of-the-mill items and if this is you, it’s likely that you’ll have a few questions ahead of your trip. Iceland airport shuttle luggage can take many forms, so let’s take a look at some of the most common outsized items you may have.

Passengers with specific requirements
Pushchairs
We’ll transport children’s pushchairs, prams and buggies in the luggage compartment of Flybus, so you’ll only need to consider what happens on board. Icelandic law requires child seats for little humans weighing less than 18kg; once they’re big enough they can sit in the seat beside you as they can wear a standard seatbelt.
If your child weighs between 9 and 18kg, then please get in touch with our customer services team in advance so that we can ensure an appropriate car seat is available. It’s not possible for this to be done from the arrivals hall as child seats aren’t a one size fits all piece of kit. Note that babies younger than a year old and who weigh less than 9 kg are only safe in car seats that require three-point seat belts, which we cannot provide.
Wheelchairs
Due to the nature of our coaches and the steepness of the steps, some travellers who require a wheelchair may find other transfer options more suitable. If you have a manual, foldable wheelchair and are mobile enough to walk short distances, then we are able to accommodate your chair in the luggage compartment.
If this isn’t the case, for instance because you have an electric wheelchair or require additional assistance, you have a couple of options. Firstly, take a look at our dedicated Flybus with lift page. Visitors hoping to travel on our Flybus equipped with a wheelchair lift should get in touch ahead of their arrival – at least 72 hours in advance.
This way, we can advise if there is availability for the date and time you require. We’ll make the necessary arrangements so that the right vehicle is waiting for you – even if your flight is delayed. A member of staff will operate the lift and ensure everything goes smoothly.
Note that only one adult wheelchair space per booking can be accommodated on this adapted bus although travel companions who don’t require a wheelchair are welcome to travel alongside you. In the case of children aged between one and five years who require a wheelchair-accessible transfer, please get in touch with our customer service agents and they’ll be able to assist you as these can’t be booked online.
Sports equipment and your airport transfer
Bicycles
Dependent on the space available, bicycles can be carried on Flybus for a small additional cost. However, although we will accept them unboxed, it’s easiest for us if they’re packaged. If you choose not to, then we require the pedals to be removed and you’ll also need to cover the chain. The cost for each bicycle is 3800 ISK.
Kayaks
We class kayaks in a similar way to bicycles and they incur the same fee of 3800 ISK if you’d like us to transport them with you to Reykjavik. In practice, this is only necessary for serious kayakers. If you’ve planned a kayaking excursion on one of Iceland’s beautiful glacial lagoons, then the tour provider will take care of your craft and any other specialist equipment you might need.
Skis
Iceland’s pristine pistes lure winter visitors keen to hit the slopes somewhere off the beaten track. You can rent specialist gear and equipment once you get here. However, if you plan to make this the focus of your holiday, you may choose to bring your own skis, snowboard and boots. So long as we have space, we allow skis on Flybus. They’ll fit in the luggage compartment beneath the bus; you’ll incur a 1500 ISK charge per item.
Golf clubs
Golf is popular in Iceland and there are places to indulge this hobby all over the country. One of the most spectacular is located on the Westman Islands but you’ll find plenty of courses with breathtaking views wherever you are. Space permitting, we’re happy for you to bring your golf clubs for your Flybus transfer. As with skis, we charge a reasonable fee of 1500 ISK.

Are musical instruments or camera equipment allowed?
If it’s legal to bring something onto the plane to Iceland then you’ll be able to bring it onto Flybus. However, we wouldn’t recommend placing fragile, delicate or expensive items in the hold of the bus. Yet there are also obvious space constraints inside the bus which need to be factored in if the items you’re travelling with are large or bulky.
For example, if you’re hoping to bring certain musical instruments or a considerable amount of camera equipment, then get in touch with us as soon as you know: it’s a good idea to liaise with our customer service team ahead of your arrival so that a mutually-acceptable solution can be found.
Most likely that will be that small valuables will be tucked by your feet, but a large item that can be secured with a seatbelt will require its own seat and therefore its own ticket. Get in touch with customer services if so. However, we’d like to politely remind you that you do this at your own risk as we can’t accept responsibility or liability in the event of damage or loss.
How do you know your additional items can be carried aboard Flybus?
If you’re the kind of traveller who doesn’t like to wing it and hates problem-solving as you go along, then peace of mind is just a call or email away. It’s easy to reach out to our friendly and efficient customer service agents, so if you have a request that’s a little out of the ordinary then send us a message.
Here’s how: any traveller intending to bring more than the usual luggage allowance can simply telephone the main BSI Bus Terminal office on (+354) 599 0000 or if it’s easier, drop us an email to [email protected] – we’ll make the necessary arrangements and you won’t have to worry about a thing.
What happens if the luggage compartment is full?
In the event that Keflavik airport bus baggage compartment is full – it’s very unusual – then departures are so frequent that it really isn’t a problem. The Flybus team will assist you in finding a seat and space for your oversized items on the next available bus. You shouldn’t have to wait around for long.
At peak periods, buses run often to cope with demand; often a Flybus is loading as the one before it is pulling away from the stand. Even if you do have to hang around for a bit, you’ll be able to get on board, settle back into your comfy seat and jump on our WiFi as you pass the time until we’re ready to depart.
We hope that reading this guide has answered any questions you might have about the luggage you’ll be bringing to Iceland. We’re happy to accommodate your suitcases and other items according to the Flybus baggage policy as set out on our website. Bringing oversized luggage to Iceland doesn’t have to be a headache, but it might need a little advance thought and preparation. If you still have a query, get in touch and we’ll do our best to help.
